REMEMBERING KURT COBAIN - AN ARTIST IS BORN - February 20, 2014

Today's special An Artist Is Born birthday shoutout goes out in remembrance of KURT COBAIN (1967). A singer, guitarist, drummer and songwriter, Cobain is best known as the frontman and primary songwriter of American grunge band NIRVANA. He was often referred to as the "spokesman of a generation" in the media, though he had difficulty coping with his fame and public image. He was influenced by a variety of artists, including Iggy Pop, Pixies, Led Zeppelin, and Black Sabbath. Unfortunately, Cobain committed suicide in 1994. Since their debut, Nirvana has sold over 25 million records in the United States and over 75 million worldwide.

Other notable music birthdays today include singer Nancy Wilson (1937), Lew Soloff of Blood, Sweat & Tears (1944), guitarist J. Gelis (1946), X co-founder Billy Zoom (1948), Steely Dan bassist Walter Becker (1950), Randy California of Spirit (1951), The Cramps co-founder Poison Ivy (1953), Cheap Trick bassist Jon Brant (1954), Europe guitarist Kee Marcello (1960), Stone Roses lead vocalist Ian Brown (1963), and The Darkness drummer Ed Graham (1976).
