AllStars with Peter Klett of Candlebox

It’s not hard to find youth programs with a celebrity name placed in the heading. Basketball camps, leadership conferences, filmmaking retreats — they’ve all got big names with a half-sincere promise that you get to shake your child’s idol’s hand at the end of the week.

At School of Rock, we not only regularly host workshops, shows, and special lessons with our kids’ rock idols — like Corey Taylor of Slipknot or Jasen Rauch of Breaking Benjamin — we take them on tour to perform with them. It’s part of our core mission to inspire kids to be dedicated to their craft, and there’s no better illustration of the power of dedication than having them perform alongside their idols on stage. One of the many programs we provide this through is the AllStars Tour.

The AllStars Tour is an annual summer tour in which the top 1% of our students, as identified through a rigorous months-long auditioning process, perform for two weeks at various legendary venues across the United States. This is an old School of Rock tradition that’s...

Halle Tomlinson's New York State of Mind - The Voice.jpg

ICYMI: School of Rock Boulder vocal instructor Halle Tomlinson was on NBC’s The Voice this week, and she killed her blind audition! Team leaders Adam Levine (frontman of Maroon 5) and Alicia Keys (R&B singer/songstress) turned their chairs around for her, with Keys describing Halle’s voice an “instant, recognizable signature.” We couldn’t agree more…way to go, Halle!

In her interview segment on the show, Halle cited School of Rock as an inspirational place for her. We think similar things of the immense talent that she carries.

In the article, he talks about touring with his band The Kickback and teaching SoR kids meaningful and deliberate drumming. "I emphasize that drums are a melodic instrument and I try to help them create melody using space and repeating rhythms," He said. "There is no doubt that there will be a whole crop of very successful bands in the next ten years that will have started at a School of Rock somewhere."

If your child wants to play the drums, trying to find the right kit for them to start on can be pretty confusing. Here are some pointers to help you find the right thing for your child. Once you've chosen a drum set, bring your budding musician to School of Rock for a tour and free trial lesson, and we'll help them love learning and playing music!

How To Buy A First Drum Set

The right place to start drum shopping depends on the person you're shopping for. If you're buying a kit for your young (single-digits) child that might or might not take an interest in it, you could be able to get away with buying the least expensive all-inclusive kit. If your kid gets into it though, you'll probably be shopping again within a year.

The options open up considerably if you decide to spend a little more up front, and you can find a kit that will last a long time, sound good and get your kid through at least high school. Important note about drums: Drums need regular adjustments to sound good and be fun to play. Luckily, this kind of...

One of the questions we get most often at School of Rock is which guitar or bass parents should buy for their child who wants to start learning to play. Here are a couple of pointers to help you find your way. Once you've put a sweet guitar or bass into your kid's hands, come to School of Rock for a tour and free trial lesson, and we'll help them love playing it!

If you haven't read part 1 of this post, you may want to go there first.

What To Look For If You're Shopping In Person

There's no way to poke and prod anything you buy online before it's at your door, so if you're shopping in person, here are a couple of things to watch out for. Important note about new instruments: One of the ways that guitar manufacturers save cost is by putting minimal labor into the final setup of the instrument. Often the parts are quality and the assembly is fine, but the fine-tuning that makes an instrument play well and sound its...

How To Buy A First Guitar or Bass

There are lots of great options for a first guitar or bass that are inexpensive and totally decent. If cost is your main consideration, you can still give your budding musician something they'll feel good about bringing to band practice. If your kid is ready for something a little more serious, there are a lot of possibilities for her/him, too.

Important note about affordable instruments: One of the ways that guitar manufacturers save costs on their affordable models is by saving labor on the final setup of the instrument. Often the parts are quality and assembled fine, but the fine-tuning that makes an instrument play well and sound its best is left to...

A full-circle story of the power of rock & roll to save lives.

One of our own, Kevin Netz, a 2013 School of Rock AllStar, got the chance to be a bone marrow donor. We are so proud of Kevin, so moved by his story, and so thrilled that yet another person has a chance at life.

Let's give Kevin some LOVE for his selfless act that has given HOPE to someone fighting their own battle and STRENGTH to those that love him/her.

School of Rock Drummers.jpg

Drummers are better known for their beats than their brain power, but research has suggested that they might actually be natural intellectuals.

Scientists who asked volunteers to keep time with a drumstick before taking intelligence tests discovered that those with the best sense of rhythm also scored highest in the mental assessments.

Prof Frederic Ullen, from the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, concluded that there was a link between intelligence, good timing and the part of the brain used for problem-solving.

He said: "The rhythmic accuracy in brain activity that is observed when a person maintains a steady beat is also important to the problem-solving capacities measured with the intelligence tests."

For the study, Prof Ullen and Guy Madison, from Sweden's Umea University, asked 34 right-handed men aged between 19 and 49 to tap a drumstick at a variety of different intervals.

They were then given a psychometric test of 60 questions and problems.

Prof Ullen said: "We found that people with high general intelligence were also more stable...
