BACK TO SCHOOL...OF ROCK

The Performance Program is School of Rock's hallmark music program, where tens of thousands of students enroll each year. Utilizing the patented School of Rock Method, Performance Program consists of a weekly group rehearsal where kids and teens learn by playing rock music's most iconic songs with a band composed of their peers. Students are assigned songs and parts that are tailored to them based on their age, experience, and ability to learn new skills and concepts. Students then work through their parts in weekly private music lessons, and refine the skills and concepts that those songs introduce. The goal of this curriculum is to prepare kids and teens for live performances. Every few months, Performance Program students take the stage and play at local music venues in front of a live audience.

SHOW DESCRIPTIONS

Radiohead

Mondays 7-9 pm

Radiohead has emerged in the 21st century as torchbearers of the progressive rock tradition, and have threaded the
needle between innovation and popularity as well as anyone. Formed in 1985 in the UK under the name On A
Friday, with members Thom Yorke (vocals), Johnny Greenwood (Guitar/multi-instrumentalist), Colin Greenwood
(Bass), Ed O’Brien (Guitar/Vocals), and Philip Selway (Drums), they eventually changed their name to Radiohead
upon the request of their record label, EMI. After two albums that found some success in the alternative scene
thanks to the slacker anthem “Creep”, Radiohead released what would become their landmark album, OK
Computer. This masterpiece cemented them as true artists and gained them worldwide success. With their constant
instrumental experimentation, culturally relevant lyrics and themes, and blend of styles and genres, Radiohead are
heralded as one of the most important and critically acclaimed rock acts of the modern era. The Radiohead show is
an ambitious challenge for all student levels, but can be one of the most rewarding and educational shows offered by
School of Rock.

21 Century Indie Rock

Tuesdays 5-7 pm

While “Indie Rock” began as an underground DIY movement in rock and roll in the late 1970s and 1980s, the term
began to be used more broadly in the aftermath of Nirvana’s success in the early 90s to refer to any music that fell
outside of mainstream tastes - a synonym to the more well-known “alternative” label. By the turn of the
millennium, Indie Rock was mainstream, and became defined by the hard-driving garage-influenced sounds of
bands like The Strokes, The Walkmen, Arctic Monkeys, The Black Keys, Dead Weather, and The Killers. As the
2000s unfolded, Indie Rock evolved to incorporate more varied influences, such as Folk (Grizzly Bear, Brandi
Carlile, Phoebe Bridgers), Space Rock (Flaming Lips, Tame Impala, King Gizzard & The Wizard Lizard), World
Music (Vampire Weekend, Florence + The Machine, Arcade Fire) and Electronica (Imagine Dragons, MGMT, St.
Vincent). This show celebrates all of the varied sounds of Indie Rock in the 21st Century, and is a great option for
students of all instruments and experience levels.

Guitar Gods

Tuesdays 7 - 9 pm

The Guitar Gods show is a celebration of the influential guitarists who have defined Rock history. These guitar
deities commonly go by just one name: Beck, Jimi, Clapton, Page, Orianthi, Santana, Van Halen, Zappa. Other
guitar heroes celebrated in this show are trailblazers such as Nancy Wilson, David Gilmour, Stevie Ray Vaughn,
Ritchie Blackmore, Lita Ford, Duane Allman, and Joe Satriani. The guitarists featured in this show help
students understand the evolution of Rock and Roll, from the Blues to modern shredding. While this show may
focus on virtuosic guitar playing, all of these stars shared the stage with bandmates who were incredible
musicians in their own rights. The songs in the Guitar Gods show present great challenges and opportunities for
all instruments at any level.

Arena Rock - Featured Show

Wednesdays 5:30-7:30 pm

Arena Rock is virtually impossible to indelibly encapsulate into an absolute genre or band list. However, the
Arena Rock Show at School of Rock can be definitively stamped as a conglomeration of catchy music that is
meant to be turned up loud with the windows down, filled with hard-hitting parts that feel good to air-guitar or
air-drum along with at home. As FM radio developed into the mainstream music medium in the '70s, bands
began performing at larger venues in order to accommodate their huge fanbases. One can subjectively argue
that any artist who has achieved superstardom to the extent of performing in arenas and stadiums could be
included. To that end, this show may include acts ranging from Journey, Styx, REO Speedwagon, and Kansas to
Meat Loaf, Foreigner, Toto, Pat Benatar and Cheap Trick. No matter the bands, the songs of the Arena Rock
show are the true stars, and anyone who’s had the joy to sing along with this music in its intended environment
will surely agree. Guitarists will have challenging parts lurking around every corner. Keyboard players will be
showcased heavily throughout. Vocalists will be challenged with belting leads and rich harmonies. Drummers
will learn the true meaning of bombastic, showy performances.

Pink FLoyd

Thursdays 7-9 pm

Pink Floyd is one of the most celebrated and influential rock acts of all time. Formed in London in 1965, the band
decided to name themselves after Delta bluesmen Pink Anderson and Floyd Council. The band began with an
experimental Pop sound, led by frontman Syd Barrett. but after Barrett’s departure became Prog Rock
heavyweights known for their ambitious songwriting, atmospheric textures, killer guitar solos, and spell-binding
stage show. Pink Floyd has sold more than 250 million albums worldwide, and their album Dark Side of the Moon
spent a record 724 consecutive weeks - almost 14 years - on the Billboard Top 200 chart. This show will be a
survey of their entire career – from the weird early days of Piper at the Gates of Dawn, to the massively successful
trilogy of Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, and Animals, to the gradual dissolution of the band in The
Wall and later albums. The Pink Floyd show is an aspirational challenge for all instruments and experience levels.

Taylor Swift

Fridays 4:30-6:30 pm

One of the most successful musical artists of all time, Taylor Swift has inspired legions of fans and musicians
around the world by writing compelling songs that draw from a remarkable variety of stylistic influences. Taylor
Swift’s “eras” of music incorporate elements of Pop, Rock, Country, Folk, Emo, Disco, and more, all tastefully
arranged around her well-crafted, confessional lyrics that often explore themes of vulnerability and resilience. She
has sold more than 200 million records in her career, and has more than fifty Top-40 hits to her name. Beyond her
music itself, Taylor Swift has revolutionized the music industry by re-recording her first six albums to reclaim
ownership of her creative work. This show is a great fit for all instruments and experience levels, and is not just a
theme for up-and-coming vocalists. An incredible artist is at their best when supported by an incredible band, and
Taylor Swift’s band features some of the most accomplished musicians on the planet, playing challenging and
highly detailed arrangements.
