When drums called his name at age 10, Russell never thought he'd end up owning a music school with his best friend and long-time bass player, Chad Greenwald. School of Rock Dublin is many things to Russell: a place for learning, a place to grow confidence, a place for healing, a place for friendship, and a place for fun!

General Manager Katy Olson
Katy Olson
General Manager
Katy started her School of Rock journey in 2022 at SoR Columbus as one of the original staff members! There, she was a voice and keys instructor, as well as the Rookies and Little Wing Program Director, and she even spent time at the front desk as the Studio Coordinator. She is excited to be a part of the School of Rock Dublin community as the General Manager!

Katy's musical background goes back over twenty years, starting as a band student playing the flute, violin, and piano, and quickly discovering she loved singing and acting a whole lot more. By college, she was focused on musical theatre, and earned Bachelor's degrees in Theatre and Psychology, followed by a Master's degree in Creative Arts Therapy. While she decided she didn't want to be a therapist, she wanted to use her training as a teacher instead, knowing how much music has impacted her life and her confidence. She believes in the importance of educators being able to support their students and hold space in their artistic journeys as they develop their own relationships with the arts and navigate the emotions and experiences that may arise along the way. A supportive, compassionate, passionate instructor can make a world of difference in the life of a student.

Outside of music, Katy loves all things aerial art (think Cirque du Soleil), she is an avid crafter (particularly crochet), she has developed a green thumb (pandemic hobby), and she is obsessed with her cat, Olive. She is also easily recognizable by her ever-changing hair colors, so look out for the human with the rockstar hair and come say hi!

She has served as studio coordinator and music director, but teaching lessons/groups is where her passion truly lies. Her students are the most important thing in the world to her, and she feels most at home when she is teaching music.

She enjoys a wide variety of styles, from rock and roll all the way to classical music. She would describe herself as a bit of a “theory nerd” and could talk for hours about different music theory concepts. She loves to share her love of music with anyone willing to listen!

Josh Mahaffey
Vocal Teacher, Guitar Teacher, Bass Guitar Teacher, Keyboard + Piano Teacher
Josh Mahaffey joined the School of Rock crew in February 2025 and is thrilled to be here! Josh plays guitar, bass, piano, sings, and likes to write songs. He has been a music lover since childhood when he discovered his parents' record collection of The Beatles, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, and other amazing artists.

As a teenager, Josh began playing instruments, sang in choirs, performed in musicals, and started bands with his friends (ever heard of Breaking News? or The Newspaper Taxis? No? Eh, worth a shot.) Josh went to school at Otterbein College, where he earned a B.F.A. in Acting. After school, he moved to New York City, where he played guitar in many theatre productions and had a band (Go Home) that recorded two EPs and played several live shows in Brooklyn music clubs.

While in New York, Josh and his wife had the first of their two awesome kids, and soon after made the decision to come back to the heartland. Nowadays, Josh's primary audiences are his sons as he plays them to sleep at bedtime. Josh is excited to plug in, tune up, and help others foster a love of music. Rock on!
Guitar Teacher, Singing Teacher Mike Ballon
Mike Ballon
Guitar Teacher, Vocal Teacher
Mike’s interest in music, and especially rock, developed very early. The first song that hit him was "Slow Ride" by Foghat when he was 6 years old. By the time he was 11, Mike became more exposed to pop culture and made friends who exposed him to new styles of music. He was eventually introduced to many other bands and with the rise of Punk and New Wave, he gained a broader horizon, and a desire to play many styles of music.

After moving to Columbus, Mike jumped into the scene, bought some gear, and started teaching himself. Mike formed a band and played a 4-song set of original songs with a pair of co-workers, opening for a band with which they had become friends. Soon he formed a cover band, RUBIX CUBES, that still plays shows today. He also formed two others in the Hardcore Rockabilly genre and recently joined a former bandmate in his band, The Molars.

School of Rock harkens Mike back to his youth, and exactly what he wishes he had: intelligent instruction, teaching songs, and playing in a group to learn all aspects of playing and performing. He is thrilled to be a part of such a concept.

Drum Teacher Chuck Tallman
Chuck Tallman
Drum Teacher
Chuck Tallman began his music career as the third drummer for the Allman Brothers "formerly the Tallman Brothers" back at their start in 1969. Dicky, Duane, and Gregg quickly realized that Chuck's drumming ability and talent were just too much for the band to keep up with. Chuck offered to play left-handed to fit in better with the groove but found that he was an even better left-handed drummer! Chuck's rhythms were so beautiful that the band would just stop playing and wipe happy tears from their eyes. Chuck didn't want to hurt their feeling or see them sad when he left, so he headed out in the middle of the night, leaving a note for the band saying: "I love you all but I have to be going. Two drummers is plenty....I am joining the circus!" SO, off goes Chuck to join the circus as the dude who gets launched out of the cannon. Now called Chuck Cannonballman, he enjoyed a wonderful 50-year career with zero injuries!

After reverting back to his original last name, Chuck returned to his first love, the drums, and joined us here at SoR Dublin as our mascot and occasional drum instructor and band director. No, he doesn't have arms or legs but it's fine...he finds a way to drum every day now. Chuck did keep one memento from the circus...the cannon, which is his current mode of transportation. As an environmentally conscious gnome, he has been lobbying our state representatives on the cannon being the new replacement for cars.
