The School of Rock in Glen Ellyn, Illinois offers music classes to help teach our community how to play instruments with skill and confidence. This school serves students from Glen Ellyn, Wheaton, Lombard, Glendale Heights, Carol Stream and other adjacent areas with guitar lessons, bass guitar lessons, drum lessons, piano lessons, singing lessons, and ukulele lessons.

Rock 101 music program in Glen Ellyn for kids and beginners
Rock 101
Ages 8-13

Rock 101 is one of School of Rock Glen Ellyn's top programs for kids and beginners. Students have one weekly group rehearsal where they learn to play classic rock songs that have been simplified for beginner musicians. Additionally, Rock 101 students in Glen Ellyn have a weekly private music lesson with an instructor who helps them learn the concepts and skills behind their performance songs.

The Path to Take the Stage

Our music programs for kids in Glen Ellyn are designed to get students on stage performing, with the goal of building strong musical proficiency. Younger students at School of Rock Glen Ellyn who have participated in the Rookies program can move to our Rock 101 music program once they’re ready. Additionally, students (typically ages 8 to 13-years-old) can begin Rock 101 without any prior experience. The goal of this rock program is to quickly develop a basic competence on students’ chosen instruments before moving on to our famous Performance Program.

The Performance Program at School of Rock Glen Ellyn is our hallmark music program, where tens of thousands of students enroll each year. It consists of a weekly group rehearsal where kids and teens learn by playing rock music's most iconic songs with a band composed of their peers. Students are assigned songs and parts that are tailored to them based on their age, experience and ability to learn new skills and concepts. Students then work through their parts in weekly private music lessons, refining the skills and concepts that those songs introduce. The goal of this curriculum is to prepare kids and teens for live performances. Every few months, School of Rock Glen Ellyn Performance Program students take the stage and play at local Glen Ellyn music venues in front of a live audience.

The Path to Take the Stage

School of Rock Glen Ellyn's music programs for kids and teens are designed to inspire by getting students on stage and performing. All of our other music education programs focus on readying students for our famous Performance Program. This is where students develop incredible musical skills. Performance Program students have often gone through our Rock 101 program first or have some previous basic music experience. These young musicians will have custom development plans outlined by their instructors with key concepts reinforced during private lessons and group rehearsals, all with the goal of performing live at a Glen Ellyn music venue.

Rookies music program for children in Glen Ellyn
Rookies
Ages 6-7

At School of Rock Glen Ellyn, our music program for children with no previous musical experience (typically ages 6 to 7-years-old) is called Rookies. Rookies students have one weekly group music lesson where they learn fundamentals like chords, rhythm and song structure. Kids get to learn and experiment with multiple instruments so they can later decide which one they ultimately want to continue pursuing in Rock 101.

The Path to Take the Stage

All of our music programs are designed to inspire students to learn and develop a strong musical proficiency. At School of Rock Glen Ellyn, younger students who are not ready for a more comprehensive program like Rock 101 can start in Rookies. Additionally, students who have completed the Little Wing program will progress into the Rookies music program. No prior musical experience is needed for Rookies. Once your child is ready for private music lessons (typically older than first or second graders), they will graduate into our Rock 101 program.

At School of Rock Glen Ellyn our Little Wing music program for preschoolers and toddlers teaches students foundational music skills by playing games and participating in other interactive musical activities. Little Wing students have one weekly group music lesson in which they use classic rock songs to learn about rhythm, song structure, melody and dynamics through play.

The Path to Take the Stage

The Little Wing music program is the first step in a young musician's journey. At School of Rock Glen Ellyn, toddlers and preschoolers who show an interest in music should start with Little Wing. As they get older, they will progress into the Rookies program, followed by Rock 101 and the Performance Program.

Songwriting
Age 12 and over

Our Songwriting program for kids and teens teaches the fundamentals of songwriting, arrangement and music theory, and helps students compose original works.  At School of Rock Glen Ellyn, songwriting students receive one weekly private lesson where they learn concepts, technique and theory on an instrument of their choice. These principles are then applied in a weekly group lesson where students work together on songwriting exercises and lyrical workshops.  Every few months, Songwriting students take the stage to perform or band together to record their original songs.

The Path to Take the Stage

Our Songwriting program for kids and teens in Glen Ellyn is designed to create musical proficiency through the creation of original music. Students at School of Rock Glen Ellyn who have completed our Rock 101 program can move to our Songwriting program once they’re ready. Additionally, new students who have prior experience with and basic knowledge of an instrument can also begin Songwriting. The program culminates with a live showcase where students perform their original compositions in bands at a local music venue. Students taking the Songwriting Program online will remotely record their original songs to produce a demo of the class's music.

At School of Rock Glen Ellyn, our students can take online, one-on-one music instruction from the comfort of their homes. We call this program School of Rock Remote. This online music program contains weekly one-on-one instruction conducted by our expert School of Rock instructors in a safe virtual lesson room.
 
Students will receive their training using our proprietary education program, The School of Rock Method™, which couples live video lessons with our proprietary Method App™, SongFirst Approach™ and Method Books™.

Ages 18+

School of Rock Glen Ellyn's Adult Program is for students over 18 years old who are looking to either improve their musical proficiency or pick up an instrument with no prior musical experience. As with most School of Rock music programs, the Adult Program uses a performance-based music education approach. This means the curriculum focuses on learning music concepts and applying them in a live performance setting. Our Adult Music Program includes one weekly private music lesson and a weekly group rehearsal. Every student at School of Rock Glen Ellyn is placed in a band of fellow adults and then assigned specific songs as a way of learning key music concepts and skills. Adult students then take the stage to play at a live show in Glen Ellyn.

The Path to Take the Stage

All of our music programs are designed to inspire by getting students on stage and performing, with the goal of building strong musical proficiency along the way. The School of Rock Glen Ellyn Adult Program is open to all experience levels and each student will follow a customized learning plan developed by their instructor. Adult students will work together during rehearsal to prepare for a live performance at a real rock venue in Glen Ellyn.

Age 17 and Under

The School of Rock Glen Ellyn House Band music program gives students under 18 the opportunity to join a gigging band composed of fellow musicians from their school. These students perform additional live shows throughout the year. All students in the Performance Program have the opportunity to audition for a spot in School of Rock Glen Ellyn's House Band. Once selected, House Band members become leaders in their School of Rock community and perform live shows at IL rock venues throughout the year.

The Path to Take the Stage

Performance is the core of School of Rock's educational approach. Therefore, we create additional opportunities for students to perform on stages throughout Glen Ellyn and the rest of IL. The House Band music program allows each school's most talented students the opportunity to join a band and play routinely in front of live audiences. Once a member, students will gain real music experience associated with gigging musicians and will become leaders and mentors inside the School of Rock community.

Age 17 and Under

The School of Rock AllStars Tour takes the very best students from around the world and sends them on a nationwide summer tour across the United States. Less than 1% of School of Rock students are selected each year to represent School of Rock as an AllStar. All Performance Program students are eligible to audition for this prestigious program. The intensive audition process starts off with video submissions followed by live auditions. Once selected, AllStar students will have an authentic touring experience including traveling on a tour bus, doing tour publicity and starring in nightly performances at famous venues and festivals during a two-week tour.

Becoming an AllStar is the highest level of achievement for a School of Rock student. They play on legendary stages large and small, including The Knitting Factory, Red Rocks Amphitheatre, The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, The Troubadour and Lollapalooza. AllStar students often go on to have accomplished careers in the music industry. Former AllStars have gone on to become touring artists, star in Broadway musicals, get signed to record deals, become finalists on talent competitions like "The Voice" and "American Idol" and have other notable roles in the music industry.

At School of Rock we teach differently than other music schools in Glen Ellyn. Our curriculum is performance-based, meaning that we prepare students to perform. Sheldon is a seven-year professional bassist in the Chicagoland area. He is well-versed in playing a large variety of musical styles such as rock, jazz, and pop. Sheldon has performed on many stages, including the United Center. He has performed with a variety of different artists, one of them being six-time Grammy Award winner BeBe Winans.

Drum Teacher
David’s passion for drums was ignited when he witnessed a rock concert at a middle school talent show in his early teens. He finds an immense amount of joy in teaching and bestowing just a little sliver of his wild musical mind into the hearts and souls of his students. David believes School of Rock is a perfect avenue for his love of teaching music, as it’s a place that really embraces individuality. He finds great pleasure in meeting each and every new student, learning about their unique perspectives on life and music, and how he can help expand their understanding through a shared love of music.

Tina's journey with School of Rock Glen Elyn started as a parent of two awesome boys that began attending the day the school opened its doors in 2013. She saw firsthand how unique and special the program was through the eyes of her sons. Sharing their excitement about music that is so close to her heart and being part of the great opportunities they were experiencing, School of Rock Glen Ellyn became home.

Tina knew from that moment that her background in education and her lifelong passion for music could truly come together at School of Rock. So when the roles of Studio Coordinator and Little Wing Instructor were presented, it was a perfect fit. With a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education from Northern Illinois University and a master’s degree from the University of Illinois, Chicago, Tina is no stranger to working with children of all ages. Being an educator, she understands the importance of music education and all the rewarding benefits it has to offer.

When she is not busy playing Tetris with the students’ schedules and helping to keep the school running smoothly, you can find Tina engaging the youngest of rockers in the Little Wing program and instilling a love for music and learning.

Jordan
General Manager
Jordan has had a passion for music for as long as they can remember. They have always had exposure to great classic rock hits from their dad who played in rock bands in the late '70s and '80s. Jordan is thrilled to be working with budding musicians at School of Rock.

Jordan holds a bachelor's degree in K-12 Music Education from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. While in college, they served as the director of the bell choir at First Lutheran Church and also participated in the top vocal ensemble at Luther College in The Nordic Choir, which has toured both nationally as well as internationally. Jordan has served as a vocals and keys instructor at School of Rock since 2019 and taught middle school choir in North Chicago, IL for two years.

Jordan knew that School of Rock was the place to be since the moment they stepped foot in the building. They are excited to continue to be a part of the School of Rock community and help it grow!

Guitar Teacher
Justin is a multi-instrumentalist specializing in guitar. A recent graduate of Millikin University with a bachelor's degree in Commercial Music, Justin comes with classical and rock guitar performance experience. Justin studied under the direction of Dr. Mark Tonelli (Clay Aiken, John Faddis, Rita Moreno) in both guitar and production studies.

A former touring School of Rock AllStar, Justin has played the Gathering of the Vibes, Gramercy Theatre, and Union Transfer. While working in many collaborative groups, Justin has played live performances in Chicago venues such as Lincoln Hall, Subterranean, Empty Bottle, and Reggie’s. A special highlight for Justin was performing on Naperville Ribfest's main stage in his hometown. He is a guitar teacher at School of Rock Glen Ellyn.

Alex first picked up the guitar when he was about 11 or 12 years old. Before he took his first lesson, he was already trying to teach himself his favorite Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, and AC/DC songs, but the floodgates opened once he started proper lessons. A few years later in high school, he started jamming in local bands and playing shows throughout Chicagoland, one band leading to another over the years as he finished college. He started giving his first guitar lessons in high school and has always loved teaching whenever he found students. Teaching the guitar is his favorite part about being a musician!

Matt is currently enrolled at Elmhurst University, initially studying music education but later switching to music theory/composition with a minor in audio production, as well as pursuing a certificate in performance. Matt has been a vocalist for over a decade, having the pleasure of performing in various ensembles, most notably the Elmhurst University Concert Choir, Chamber Singers, and vocal jazz ensemble Late Night Blues. He is also a member of an a capella group with other school students. Matt is accustomed to singing in all sorts of environments, whether live on stage, in a recording studio, or in his own at-home setup!

Music Director
Jesse is a vocalist from the northwest suburbs of Chicago. He has been playing music since he was 13 years old, where he fell in love with classic rock. Having picked up the guitar first, Jesse took part in school music programs like jazz band, symphonic band, pit orchestra, pep band, and choir, and gigged with his own garage band in high school. In college, he initially studied jazz guitar studies at UIC and then shifted his interest to music education and studied at Vandercook College of Music, where he switched his primary instrument to Voice.

Jesse graduated with a bachelor's degree in Music Education in 2020. He started his music teaching career at Holmes Junior High School, teaching choir and general music for two years. Jesse's heart always stayed with the music that got him into it, rock n' roll. This passion led him to become the Music Director of School of Rock Glen Ellyn, which he has been happily doing since the summer of 2022. His influences include AC/DC, Van Halen, Foo Fighters, Alter Bridge, Black Sabbath, Led Zepplin, and Soundgarden (you get the idea.) He is also the lead vocalist for the band On The Morrow.

Olivia is a college student currently pursuing a degree in Music Business and Management. Throughout the past years of vocal experience, Olivia has been classically trained to sing in top choral ensembles and has also been trained in a modern sense to sing pop, rock, and metal music. Olivia's modern vocal training actually started at School of Rock as a student at the Glen Ellyn location many years ago!

In addition to being an instructor at School of Rock, Olivia is currently the manager and lead vocalist of a progressive metal-core band called Sacred May. With this band, she plays shows and festivals in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs! With big aspirations, Olivia has also gained experience and knowledge in the areas of production and recording as Sacred May works a lot in their home studio. She is extremely excited to continue her musical journey at School of Rock now as a teacher instead of a student!

Kayman is an independent music performer, teacher, and composer. He graduated from Columbia College Chicago in 2020 with a bachelor's degree in music composition and production. Combining his passion for creating music with his years of teaching experience, Kayman hopes to teach and inspire others to connect to the world around them through the music they love.

In his freshman year of high school, Ben took up electric bass and then soon after took what he learned from bass over to guitar, drums, and vocals. Throughout high school, Ben spent his time playing in cover bands, developing his writing and skills as a player, whilst also bettering his understanding of working collaboratively with others.

After high school, Ben learned how to fully write, record, and release music, specifically through an original progressive metal band called Sacred May. This group gave invaluable insight into recording, live sound and lighting production, cinematography/filmmaking, and music marketing.

Present day, Ben fills his time with playing and writing songs concurrently with studying for a degree in engineering, working on his solo works and different collaborative musical projects, and playing with Sacred May. Ben’s enthusiasm lies within the pursuit of progress, and with that in mind, he intends to explore music education and develop even further as a musician, subsequently helping others become musicians too. He continues to feel inspired, inspire others, and have as much fun as possible doing it.

Megan is a former longtime Wichita School Of Rock student and recent college graduate. Megan has always been incredibly passionate about music and the outlet it provides during difficult times. They started training at the School of Rock in Wichita at age 11 with vocal lessons, went through Rock 101, the Performance Program, and was also involved in House Band. Megan completed 19 Performance Program shows, two Summerfest performances, and two terms in house band during their time as a student.

Megan moved at age 18 from Wichita, KS to Chicago to attend Columbia College Chicago as a musical theatre major and pursue their lifelong dreams in music. When they graduated in May of 2023 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Megan began exploring teaching as an opportunity to help students strive as their School of Rock instructors did for them. Megan also previously taught at another School of Rock location before joining the Glen Ellyn School.

Megan has been trained in rock and classical music and has dabbled in other genres of training such as jazz and metal. Megan spends their free time singing everywhere she goes, playing and songwriting on the ukulele, and discovering new music to draw inspiration from.

Megan’s music influences come from classic rock like Journey and Queen, alternative and modern rock such as Nothing But Thieves, Paramore, Arctic Monkeys, and The Wombats, and folk and misc. music such as Noah Kahan, Conan Gray, AJR, 5SOS, Declan McKenna, and COIN.

Megan finds great joy and fulfillment in instilling and helping grow a passion for music in others and is incredibly excited to be able to continue to do so at the School Of Rock in Glen Ellyn.

Jim began playing drums at age 10, joined his first rock band at 13, and later went to the Berklee College of Music. He plays styles from reggae to bebop, with a lot of heavy metal and blues in between.

Sam is a multi-instrumentalist, singer/songwriter, and music educator from Glen Ellyn. Playing guitar, bass, keys, and drums from the age of twelve, Sam developed a deep reverence for independent and underground music. With over a decade of combined experience in organizing, touring, recording, production, and instruction, Sam is passionate about all things music. Sam actively performs throughout Chicagoland with indie pop outfit Nel + the Powderbelles.
