ROCK 101

AGES 7-10 | rehearsals: monday, tuesday or friday 4:15 | saturday 12:45

Rock 101 is an amazing starting point for our young beginners. Our students learn to rock with one-on-one instruction combined with learning scaled back versions of songs from our setlist library in a supportive and fun group setting. Students build a solid foundation of skills in preparation for graduating to the Performance Program. Rock 101 students perform periodic live showcases at School of Rock. Graduating students are the opening act for the Performance Program at our end of season shows.

PERFORMANCE PROGRAM: ARENA ROCK

Ages 10-17 | rehearsals: mondays 6:00-8:00

Arena Rock is virtually impossible to put into an absolute genre or band list. However, the Arena Rock Show at School of Rock can be definitively stamped as a conglomeration of catchy music that is meant to be turned up loud with the windows down, filled with hard-hitting parts that feel good to air-guitar or air-drum along with. As FM radio developed into the mainstream music medium in the '70s, bands began performing at larger venues in order to accommodate their huge fanbases. One can subjectively argue that any artist who has achieved superstardom to the extent of performing in arenas and stadiums could be included. Guitarists will have challenging parts lurking around every corner. Keyboard players will be showcased heavily throughout. Vocalists will be challenged with belting leads and rich harmonies. Drummers will learn the true meaning of bombastic, showy performances. Bass players will be exposed to melodic bass lines which compliment their 6-string counterparts. This is a great show for all instruments!

performance program: garage rock

ages 10-17 | rehearsals: tuesdays 6:00-8:00

Garage Rock refers to raw and powerful Rock & Roll that prioritizes emotion and energy over sophistication or technical accuracy. The '60s Garage Bands were in many ways the precursors to the Punk movement. Their songs tended to be short and repetitive, with simple forms and arrangements. While the Garage band phenomenon peaked in the '60s, the concept has never really gone away. Stripped down bands such as the Arctic Monkeys, Hives and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard carried the Garage Rock tradition into the 21st century. Much like Punk Rock, Garage Rock is a broad genre with many sub-genres and different movements and eras. Garage Rock teaches fundamental musical concepts and makes for a fantastic and fun show theme geared towards beginners and more advanced players alike.

performance program: rolling stones

ages 10-17 | rehearsals: thursdays 6:00-8:00

Dubbed "The Greatest Rock & Roll Band In The World" ,  The Rolling Stones have remained relevant and rocking for nearly 60 years. Though their songs are rooted in the Blues that inspired them to pursue music, throughout their legendary career they have incorporated everything into their sound from Rock to Country to Blues to Punk to Disco. For an education in pocket, groove, stage presence, and tasteful lead playing, there are few equals to a Stones show. Keith Richards' guitar wizardry will serve as a masterclass for guitarists looking to expand their rhythmic prowess. Drummers will not only be tested on their ability to play for the song, but they will also have opportunities to explore percussion usage like bongos, congas, and shakers. Studying Mick Jagger’s stage moves and the creative vocal arrangements within the Rolling Stones catalog is an excellent learning experience for vocal students of all ages and skill levels. Keys players will enjoy learning from Ian Stewart, Jack Nitzsche, Nicky Hopkins, Billy Preston, and Ian McLagan - all legendary players who recorded and performed with the Stones. From standing tall on the front lines of the British Invasion to selling out stadiums in more recent times, The Rolling Stones are truly one of the most impactful and important Rock n’ Roll bands of all time, and they will continue to inspire future generations for years to come.

performance program: michael jackson vs. prince

ages 10-17 | rehearsals: fridays 6:00-8:00

There were, arguably, no two bigger superstars in the '80s. Michael Jackson earned the title as the undisputed “King of Pop.” Prince is hailed as one of the greatest musicians of his generation. Not only was he a guitar virtuoso, but he was also a prodigal multi-instrumentalist who played every instrument on his early albums, including bass, drums, and keyboards. Known not only for his prolific musical output, his wild, energetic dancing and genre-bending music made a strong case for Prince as the top superstar of the 1980s. This show will have plenty of opportunities for students to contribute on a variety of instruments in a wide range of styles, and there will surely be challenging moments where students at all levels can learn something new.
