AT SCHOOL OF ROCK NORWOOD, WE DON'T TEACH MUSIC TO PUT ON SHOWS - WE PUT ON SHOWS TO TEACH MUSIC. STUDENTS ARE ASSIGNED SONGS SELECTED TO DEVELOP THEM AS MUSICIANS, AND WORK ON THEM IN PRIVATE LESSONS WITH THEIR INSTRUCTORS, AS WELL AS IN WEEKLY REHEARSALS WITH GROUPS MADE UP OF THEIR PEERS. THE SEASON CULMINATES WITH A PERFORMANCE AT OUR SEASONAL SHOWCASE, WHERE THEY CAN SHOW YOU EVERYTHING THEY'VE BEEN WORKING ON THROUGHOUT THE SEASON!

INDIE ROCK
WEDNESDAYS 5:00-7:30PM
Indie Rock began as an underground DIY movement in rock and roll in the late 1970s and 1980s, the term began to be used more broadly in the aftermath of Nirvana’s success in the early 90s to refer to any music that fell outside of mainstream tastes - a synonym to the more well-known “alternative” label. By the turn of the millennium, Indie Rock was mainstream, and became defined by the hard-driving garage-influenced sounds of bands like The Strokes, The Walkmen, Arctic Monkeys, The Black Keys, Dead Weather, and The Killers. As the 2000s unfolded, Indie Rock evolved to incorporate more varied influences, such as Folk (Grizzly Bear, Brandi Carlile, Phoebe Bridgers), Space Rock (Flaming Lips, Tame Impala, King Gizzard & The Wizard Lizard), World Music (Vampire Weekend, Florence + The Machine, Arcade Fire) and Electronica (Imagine Dragons, MGMT, St. Vincent). This show celebrates all of the varied sounds of Indie Rock from it's underground roots to it's current mainstream domination, and is a great option for students of all instruments and experience levels.
WOMEN OF ROCK
SATURDAYS 11:00AM-1:30PM
For as long as there has been what we now know as classic rock, women have played a big part in its development and success. As early as the late '60s, artists such as Aretha Franklin and Janis Joplin were fronting A-list bands. Shortly thereafter, the genre began to see its first all-female bands, such as The Runaways and Fanny. Throughout the '70s and early '80s, more woman became bona fide rock stars, paving the way for other female artists to rise to the top of the rock genre. Some were a major influence on artists of their generation and the next; some were a major influence on the success of the bands with which they worked. All excelled at creating and performing rock music, as songwriters, instrumentalists, and singers. This show will pay tribute Women in music throughout history, with diverse artists such as, Heart, Blondie, Brittney Spears, Phoebe Bridgers, St. Vincent, Olivia Rodrigo, Paramore, Fleetwood Mac. This is a great show for all instruments and experience levels.
GUITAR GODS
SATURDAYS 2:00-4:30PM
The Guitar Gods show is a celebration of the influential guitarists who have defined Rock history. These guitar deities commonly go by just one name: Beck, Jimi, Clapton, Page, Orianthi, Santana, Van Halen, Zappa. Other guitar heroes celebrated in this show are trailblazers such as Nancy Wilson, David Gilmour, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Ritchie Blackmore, Lita Ford, Duane Allman, and Joe Satriani. The guitarists featured in this show help students understand the evolution of Rock and Roll, from the Blues to modern shredding. While this show may focus on virtuosic guitar playing, all of these stars shared the stage with bandmates who were incredible musicians in their own rights. The songs in the Guitar Gods show present great challenges and opportunities for all instruments at any level.
