BLACK KEYS VS. WHITE STRIPES

MONDAYS 5:00-7:00 PM

The Black Keys vs White Stripes show is one of the School of Rock shows that gives a nod to more contemporary bands who have forged their name in the music industry and become inspirations to others. Both bands rely heavily on Blues-based riffs and a Garage Rock sound, each with a stripped-down lineup of only two band members. The White Stripes are a lesson in simplicity and are the standout leaders of the early 2000’s Garage-Rock revival movement. While Jack White champions traditions of the past to peddle his reinterpretations of Blues, the Black Keys are a lesson in evolving into the new internet-age music era. Both Jack White and Dan Auerbach are known as some of the most influential modern-day rock guitarists. Aspiring guitarists can learn a soulful approach to playing in this show. Although these artists are not known as technical virtuosos on their instruments, achieving their feel is a task for any level player. To serve the songs, drummers will be playing in the pocket and maintaining driving rhythms. This is a great show for vocalists at all levels, as both bands feature catchy and emotive melodies that heavily influenced modern Rock music.

Listen to: "10AM Automatic" by The Black Keys, ""Blue Ochid" by The White Stripes, "I Got Mine" by The Black Keys, "Little Black Submarines" by The Black Keys, and "You Don't Know What Love Is" by The White Stripes

CLASSIC R&B

TUESDAYS 5:30-7:30 PM

Rhythm and Blues music was foundational to the evolution of rock and roll! Originating with jazz and blues in the 1940s, R&B music was predominantly created by black musicians for black audiences until the 1950s, when artists such as Etta James, Little Richard, Fats Domino, and Ike & Tina Turner began to achieve crossover success with white audiences as well. By the early 1960s, record labels like Motown and Stax were churning out legendary hits by Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight, The Supremes, and Otis Redding, which influenced virtually all of the Rock and Roll and Pop music that came after. The Classic R&B show features groove-oriented music with dynamic arrangements and standout vocal performances. Students participating in this show will have an opportunity to hone their rhythmic skills and broaden their repertoire of music styles by focusing on the music that inspired artists such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and The Who, and which continues to be relevant today with its influence on modern Pop stars such as Adele and John Legend. Classic R&B is one of the most educational shows that School of Rock offers!

Listen to: "i Put A Spell On You" by Nina Simone, "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor, "My Girl" by The Temptations, "Something's Got A Hold On Me" by Etta James, and "Stop in the Name of Love" by The Supremes.

classic metal

WEDNESDAYS 5:00-7:00 PM

Classic Metal is widely regarded as ranging from the late 1960s Proto-Metal sound of Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin up until the mid 1980s, when Thrash Metal reigned supreme with bands like the ‘big four’ (Metallica, Anthrax, Megadeth and Slayer) and Hair Metal was still a blip on the horizon. Full of guitar wizardry and riffs galore, Classic Metal’s explosion in the 1970s and early '80s would set the tone for a generation of Metal bands to come and leave an indelible impression on the music industry. This show will trace the roots of metal, from the late '70s hard rock, Ronnie James Dio fronted bands like Black Sabbath and Rainbow and to metal’s big break in the '80s with bands like Metallica and Megadeth. If you’re looking to sharpen your shredding skills on guitar and bass, speed up your chops on the drums, or hone your high range vocals - the Classic Metal show is for you!

Listen to: "For Whom the Bell Tolls" by Metallica, "The Hellion/Electric Eye" by Judas Priest, "Queen of the Reich" by Queensryche, "Holy Diver" by Ronnie James Dio, and "Hallowed Be Thy Name" by Iron Maiden.

One hit wonders

THURSDAYS 5:30-7:30 PM

One Hit Wonders is a super fun show that students and parents will love!  What constitutes a One-Hit Wonder? The Billboard Book of One-Hit Wonders defines the term as a musical act that registers on the Billboard Pop Top 40 chart once in their career. While there have been One Hit Wonders since the beginning of the Rock and Roll era, this show contains a heavy dose of ‘80s hits like “Come On Eileen” by Dexy’s Midnight Runners, “I Ran (So Far Away)” by Flock of Seagulls, and “Take On Me” by a-ha.   There are also some ‘70s gems, such as  “Mr. Big Stuff” by Jean Knight, and '90s favorites such as Semisonic’s “Closing Time” and Chumbawamba’s “Tubthumping”.  While these artists might not be household names, the One Hit Wonders show presents a musical journey through some of Rock’s most infectiously memorable tunes. This show is great for all instruments and skill levels, and will put a smile on every Rock fan’s face!

Pink floyd

SATURDAYS 12:00-2:00 PM

Pink Floyd is one of the most celebrated and influential rock acts of all time. Formed in London in 1965, the band decided to name themselves after Delta bluesmen Pink Anderson and Floyd Council. The band began with an experimental Pop sound, led by frontman Syd Barrett. but after Barrett’s departure became Prog Rock heavyweights known for their ambitious songwriting, atmospheric textures, killer guitar solos, and spell-binding stage show. Pink Floyd has sold more than 250 million albums worldwide, and their album Dark Side of the Moon spent a record 724 consecutive weeks - almost 14 years - on the Billboard Top 200 chart. This show will be a survey of their entire career – from the weird early days of Piper at the Gates of Dawn, to the massively successful trilogy of Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, and Animals, to the gradual dissolution of the band in The Wall and later albums. The Pink Floyd show is an aspirational challenge for all instruments and experience levels.
Listen to: "Brain Damage", "Have A Cigar". "Pigs (Three Different Ones), "Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts 1-5)", and "Time".

Fleetwood MAC

SATURDAYS 3:00-5:00 PM

One of the world’s best-selling bands, Fleetwood Mac formed as a British Blues group in 1967 and morphed into a chart-topping British-American pop band in the mid-1970s. Despite several band member iterations, the Fleetwood Mac’s best known lineup featured Mick Fleetwood (drums), John McVie (bass), Lindsey Buckingham (guitar/vocals), Christine McVie (keys/vocals), and Stevie Nicks (vocals). It was this lineup that recorded their most successful and critically acclaimed Rumors album, which featured hits like ‘Dreams’, ‘Go Your Own Way’, ‘The Chain’ and ‘Don’t Stop’. Throughout the remaining decades, Fleetwood Mac went on to produce material that, while somewhat popular, did not critically live up to the success of Rumors. Their May 1997 live concert on a soundstage in Burbank, CA, was recorded and subsequently released as The Dance, which premiered on MTV that year and brought the band back into the public spotlight and widespread popularity. Fleetwood Mac, including the Rumors-era and the original (Green, Kirwan, and Spencer) lineups, was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. Fleetwood Mac is an amazing show that will challenge vocal students to master harmonies, guitar players to learn the unorthodox fingerpicking style of Lindsey Buckingham, drummers to study Mick Fleetwood’s extremely versatile drumming, keyboardists to grasp how Christine McVie merged classical-training playing with rock improvisation, and bassists to learn from John McVie’s creative and rock-solid bass foundations.

Listen to: "Landslide", "Rhiannon", "Sara", "Silver Springs" and "You Make Loving Fun".
