We're turning up the heat this summer with an all-new lineup of seasonal shows! At School of Rock Roslyn, we don't teach music to put on shows - we put on shows to teach music. Students are assigned songs selected to develop them as musicians, and work on them in private lessons with their instructors, as well as in weekly rehearsals with groups made up of their peers. The season culminates with a performance at our seasonal showcase, where they can show you everything they've been working on throughout the season!

ROCK 101: POP LEGENDS
ages 7-10 | rehearses mondays, 6pm-7:30pm or wednesdays, 5pm-6:30pm
Before there was Rock and Roll, there was Pop. Short for Popular, Pop music was whatever was popular at that moment. The Pop Legends show will celebrate the impact that acclaimed artists have made on the music industry. It will encompass a vast timeline of Pop Music ranging from the 60s through today, including artists such as Carol King, Aretha Franklin, Mariah Carey, Madonna, Taylor Swift, Stevie Nicks, Michael Jackson, Amy Winehouse, Adele and many more. This show is a great challenge for “Rock” guitar players who want to work on new chord shapes and voicings. Bass players will be able to work on very challenging melodic parts in support of drummers who will learn limb independence on many of the parts. Vocalists’ skills will be pushed with the level of singing and performing required in this show, while keyboardists will be heavily represented in these well-known arrangements.

SCHOOL OF ROCK SUPER SENIOR REHEARSALS TAKE PLACE AT SCHOOL OF ROCK ROSLYN, 915 WILLIS AVENUE, ALBERTSON NY 11507
GRAD SCHOOL: JOAN JETT & PAT BENATAR
AGES 18+ | REHEARSES MONDAYS, 7:30P-8:30P AT SCHOOL OF ROCK SYOSSET/OYSTER BAY
Joan Jett and Pat Benatar - these iconic rockers both rose to prominence in the late 1970s, and became international superstars in the early 1980s. Their styles are different but complement each other well - both are grounded in classic guitar rock. However, Joan Jett embraces more of a punk aesthetic while Pat Benatar employs a more Hard Rock edge. Joan Jett’s initial entry into the music scene was as a guitarist for the all-girl group The Runaways. Flanked by fellow guitarist Lita Ford, The Runaways created a following in the mid '70s as a Hard Rock/Punk band. Jett decided to branch off on her own to form Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. In 1981, The Blackhearts released the mega-hit “I Love Rock and Roll” and cemented their place in '80s rock culture. Pat Benatar's first major LP In The Heat Of The Night was released in 1979, and includes her breakthrough single “Heartbreaker” which reached the Billboard Top 25 in the US. Benatar continued to produce chart-topping hits in the '80s and inspired many female-fronted bands to become prominent in the music industry. This is a great show for up-and-coming players, but there are definitely challenges for advanced students here, particularly with some of Pat Benatar’s tricky song arrangements.

GRAD SCHOOL: HAIR METAL
AGES 18+ | REHEARSES WEDNESDAYS, 7:15P-9:15P AT SCHOOL OF ROCK SYOSSET/OYSTER BAY
The Hair Metal show is one of the most fun shows in the SoR repertoire, and can be very challenging as well. Hair Metal took over radio and MTV in the 1980s, as bands like Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, Van Halen and Quiet Riot combined great songwriting, acrobatic shred guitar, and sugary vocal harmonies with flashy outfits and tons of hairspray, capturing the hearts of America’s teenagers. As the 1980s began, a fusion of several musical styles began to occur. The Glam Rock sound and imagery of the '70s began to combine with Metal and Punk to create a “glittery” Heavy Metal: Hair Metal. As the decade moved forward, the first wave of L.A. bands began to get signed and work their way up the charts. This included acts such as Quiet Riot with Metal Health, Dokken with Breaking the Chains, and Ratt with Out of the Cellar. While each had their own distinct sound, what they shared in common was an image of leather and chains, and an aggressive musical style that emphasized great hooks and loud guitars. Students will have a chance to play selections by Motley Crue, Poison, Guns n Roses, Ozzy, Van Halen, Skid Row, Quiet Riot, Lita Ford, Def Leppard, Ratt, Warrant, Bon Jovi, Dokken, Whitesnake and the like!
