LEFT OF THE DIAL

MONDAY’S 5:30-8PM

Alternative rock from a time before “alternative” was a genre, Left of the Dial refers to the underground rock featured on many college radio stations in the 1980s and early 1990s, before Grunge swept alternative music into the mainstream. These college stations often broadcast at lower frequencies, which were located on the far left side of the analog FM radio dial. The term “Left of the Dial” was coined in a song by The Replacements, and an eventual compilation album by Rhino Records further cemented the phrase as a nickname for this era of music. A few of the bands and artists from this era found mainstream success, but all of them began as DIY underdogs and were incredibly influential in the evolution of the Grunge and Indie Rock that defined rock music in the 90s and 2000s. Left of the Dial is known for its wide variety of musical styles and unique personalities, including artists like Sonic Youth, REM, The Pixies, Depeche Mode, Meat Puppets, Kate Bush, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Cure, The Smiths, and Dinosaur Jr. Students of all instruments and experience levels can expect good challenges playing these songs that often still sound innovative, even today.

Pop punk & emo

TUESDAYS 5:30-8PM

In the 1990s, artists such as Green Day, Offspring, and Blink-182 achieved success by blending punk attitudes and influences with a more polished, melodic, commercially appealing sound than their often raw predecessors. By the 2000s, Pop Punk and its Emo offshoot (featuring lyrics that touch on emotional and confessional topics) were fully entrenched in the mainstream music world, with bands such as Fall Out Boy, Paramore, My Chemical Romance, and Panic! At the Disco topping the charts and selling out arenas. Of course, this music is still incredibly popular and influential today. A fun show that can be musically challenging but also teaches solid fundamental skills, Pop Punk & Emo is sure to appeal to all levels of students and will entertain any crowd!

THE BIG FOUR

 WEDNESDAY’S 5:30-8PM

The "Big Four of Metal" refers to the four most influential and pioneering thrash metal bands that defined the genre in the 1980s. They are:

Metallica – Often considered the biggest of the Big Four, Metallica achieved massive mainstream success with albums like Master of Puppets and The Black Album. Known for their aggressive yet melodic sound and technical musicianship.
Megadeth – Led by former Metallica guitarist Dave Mustaine, Megadeth is known for their complex compositions, fast tempos, and political lyrics. Their albums like Peace Sells... but Who's Buying? and Rust in Peace are thrash metal landmarks.
Slayer – Known for their extreme speed and aggression Slayer's albums like Reign in Blood are considered some of the heaviest and most influential in the genre.
Anthrax – The most "punk" of the Big Four, Anthrax combined thrash metal with a sense of humor and social commentary. Albums like Among the Living helped establish their place in the thrash scene.

Together, these bands shaped the sound and ethos of thrash metal, influencing countless other acts and helping define heavy metal in the '80s and beyond.

SOUNDTRACKS

SATURDAY’S 10AM-12:30PM

Soundtracks are collections of music specifically created or selected to accompany the narrative and emotional tone of a film. Soundtracks are integral to filmmaking, helping to establish mood, build tension, evoke nostalgia, or deepen the emotional impact of the film’s narrative.

This show will mainly focus on selections from soundtrack albums – Which often feature pre-existing songs or music that are licensed for use in the film, such as classic rock, pop, or orchestral tracks. Examples include the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtracks, which are full of '70s and '80s hits, and Pulp Fiction, known for its eclectic mix of rock, surf, and soul tracks. These albums & songs have also become popular in their own right, often sparking music sales or reviving interest in specific genres or artists.
