Somehow, the musical master Jon Batiste, has never heard the music of Kayleigh Rose Amstutz, better known to audiences around the world as Chappell Roan. Batiste recently played the National Anthem at the Super Bowl and Ms. Roan recently took home the coveted Best New Artist award at the Grammys. As a guest on the Pianote channel on YouTube, which has over 2 million subscribers, Batiste was given the drums and vocals of the song only.
“I’m imagining the music that’s missing is very synthesizer-based and simple,” he said, nailing the production map of the song. He goes on to improv piano as he says that the song has the vibe of a “pep rally” which really can’t be more on-the-money.
Although he wasn’t familiar with Chappell Roan, who is also known for her campy drag looks and elaborate stage sets, Batiste has participated in pop paradise. He collaborated with Beyoncé and Lana del Rey in the past. In 2023, Batiste told The A.V. Club he and Del Rey two work well together because they employ a parallel creative technique. “Similar to the way that I’ll sit down at an instrument—mainly the piano or any sound of any instrument, if it grabs my attention—if I’m going the instrumental route and not the vocal route, it’s stream of consciousness,” he said. “[Lana] is like that in terms of narrative threads. Even if it’s abstract narrative threads, she’ll have an idea of a world, or a time and a place, or a person whose singing to another person, and she’ll spin out a song from that.”
